ABOUT THE TECHNOLOGY / SCIENCE

What Is PET Imaging?

Positron Emission Tomography (PET) enables visualization of biological processes at the molecular level. It plays a critical role in oncology, neurology, cardiology, and research applications.

Why J-PET Represents a Breakthrough

Unlike conventional PET systems built using costly crystal detectors, J-PET is based on:

Plastic scintillators — cost-effective, fast-response materials enabling low-dose imaging
Ring-based modular architecture — scalable field-of-view, future-proof design
Ultra-fast timing electronics enabling multiphoton registration
Open and adaptable scanning areas improving patient comfort

Scientific Frontier: Positronium-Based Biomarkers

J-PET is engineered to enable imaging of positronium lifetimes, a potential new biomarker with
early indications in cancer detection and tissue characterization research.

The first ever positronium image of the human brain was demonstrated using J-PET scanner.
The images and method is described in the article published by Science Advances:
Positronium image of the human brain in vivo | Science Advances

J-PET is the first Quantum PET. The first demonstration of quantum entanglement studies with J-PET were published by Science Advances:
Nonmaximal entanglement of photons from positron-electron annihilation demonstrated using a plastic PET scanner | Science Advances
